What is student agency? Student agency relates to students having an active role in their learning through voice and choice, in the process. When students have agency in their learning, the student is making, creating doing, sharing, and collaborating in ways that are meaningful to them. Expert learning as seen through a Universal Design for Learning lens are students that practice agency. They are purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, and strategic and goal-directed. Technology, both assistive technology and universal support technology can scaffold students as they plan, monitor, and reflect on their learning.
This session will discuss how assistive and universal technology in the classroom can help enhance students’ engagement, efficacy, and strategic action. We will explore key approaches when introducing universal support tools and assistive technology that promote student agency and develop expert learners. You will leave the session with the knowledge to take action steps and create a roadmap to begin.
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least 3 technology tools to increase student engagement and executive function.
- Understand at least 2 factors that are necessary for supportive technologies to impact student performance.
- Understand how technology supports the theoretical frameworks of student agency and expert learning.
Janet Peters, M.Ed., Independent Consultant, specializing in AT implementation, UDL, and inclusive technology through systems change. Current projects include supporting statewide UDL and AT initiatives with Kansas Infinitec through the Kansas Technical Assistance System Network (TASN). She has over 25 years of experience in the field, including as the Project Director for the Center on Inclusive Technology & Education Systems (CITES) at CAST, Regional Project Coordinator for Assistive and Accessible Technology for the Great Lakes ADA Center, and Project Director of the Simon Technology Center at PACER Center, a Parent and Training Information Center. Janet is passionate about using technology and systems change to improve inclusion and learning outcomes for students with disabilities.
