Description
Workshop Date/Time: Tuesday, October 21 | 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Presenters: Kelly Fonner, M.S., Donna McNear, B.A.
Description: Writing for all children is often the “neglected half of literacy.” For children who write via non-traditional modalities, family and staff often skip the emerging steps of scribbling and drawing. We put an adapted keyboard in front of a child, provide an alternative pencil, or a braille input/keyboard tool and immediately expect them to type their name, instead of affording them needed time to explore and learn without the burden of spelling. We need to encourage, support, and provide creative and meaningful opportunities for students with complex learning needs to experience the beginning stages of putting ideas to print/braille through a variety of activities, strategies and technologies encouraging the acts of scribbling, drawing, and mark making. Join us, two very passionate about scribbling presenters, as we share strategies and tools based upon our work with a wide variety of students who have high support needs in learning to write.
