Accessible lessons start with identifying needs and design, followed up by creation, and finally instruction. This session will start by reviewing common lesson planning techniques and curriculum sources. Participants will be encouraged to explore the accessibility of current lesson plans and begin to think about how lessons could be created differently. This session will introduce multiple methods of design, including Design Thinking, Content Design, and the Engineering Design Process as well as less formal strategies. This session will review executive functioning and then take a look inside of a classroom to find areas that students may struggle and give concrete examples of techniques and strategies for supporting students. Supports will be discussed for the classroom environment, teacher supports, and for students that all work together to help students who may be struggling with executive functioning in your classroom.
Executive Functioning consists of important every-day skills that often get taken for granted. How we plan our day, organize tasks, and the length of time we can stay focused on what we need to do are all considered executive functioning tasks. This session will discuss what executive functioning is, how executive functioning skills relate to education and what educators can do to help support students. Attention, memory and organization will be discussed under the umbrella of executive functioning and participants will leave with a better understanding of how to support their students in a variety of educational environments.
