Workshop Summary:

Auditory Scanning is an access technique critical to many students who have complex bodies, who also have visual processing problems. However, for its successful use, particular consideration must be paid to unique and individual configurations within the system itself. Frequently, teachers, therapists and families are hesitant to “alter” the configurations that the device uses as a “standard” display. This workshop will assist teachers/therapists/families to feel comfortable changing configurations, with the knowledge of how to do it, as well as why it is important for their student/child. Access to the systems also needs to be considered. Cognitive mapping and navigational strategies must be taught with access in activity in the classroom, too. Strategies and considerations will be shared.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. The participant will be able to define the term “dynamic triangle” within the context of an AAC device and auditory scanning and identify at least 2 specific components within the set-up (configuration) of the device which need to be altered for auditory scanning.
2. The participant will be able to define “cognitive load” and “motor memory” and describe how they work together in developing AAC independence.
3. The participant can identify two activities which support the student’s development of cognitive mapping and its use when using an AAC device with Auditory scanning
