Workshop Summary:

This full-day workshop on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) equips practitioners with tools and strategies for holistic AAC system customization. Participants will explore evidence-based frameworks, hands-on applications, and innovative approaches to address vocabulary selection, symbol modification, physical access, and sensory processing needs. The workshop features practical tools like the AAC User Customization Form and a Consideration Checklist, guiding attendees in creating personalized user files. Topics include theoretical foundations, case studies, hands-on practice, and brief discussions on AI’s potential role in streamlining customizations. By attending, participants will master personalization techniques to enhance user engagement, communication, and device use effectively.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Evaluate an AAC user's physical access and sensory processing needs using the AAC User Customization and Considerations Forms to develop a comprehensive customization plan.
2. Implement at least three evidence-based strategies for modifying AAC systems to accommodate specific physical access and sensory processing challenges.
3. Integrate AI tools to enhance AAC customization and create learner-led, project-based communication activities that address individual user needs.
